Derrick White does a wonderful job of creating “wins” at all three levels of the Spot Up action.
The Catch: Great Shot Prep Footwork!
^^ This is the epicenter. Why would anyone close out hard on you if you can't shoot? Guys that don’t do the work early with their feet don’t BELIEVE they can shoot it.
Closeout Defender: Reading “Dare You vs. Oh Shit” closeout (high hip vs. low hip).
^^ All options here come from shooting. If you are making shots, then people will close out harder, AND if you are making shots, that means you are doing the work early with your feet and putting yourself in rhythm and on balance to either shoot, attack or sell your defender a great storytelling pump fake (Like Keyser Soze Taught you!)
Help Defenders: Reading Early, Late, and No Help.
^^ Take what the defense gives you. No need to overcomplicate it. Always hit singles.
Spot-ups are one of the most efficient actions in the half-court, and White does an amazing job of creating “extra” Spot-up opportunities with good WIMS reads.
The Basics Of WIMS:
WIMS is strictly for off-ball movement. It does not apply when you have the ball in your hands.
Space is the most valuable commodity on any basketball court. Open space is always in different spots and can only be accessed by being able to read three central questions in unison.
Where is the open space?
You can’t attack the space if you don’t know where it is. This is always step one.
Where is the ball?
The ball can only travel in a straight line. To get the ball in the open space, you must create a clean passing window the ball can travel through.
Where is my defender?
The defender will always give away something; they can’t take away everything. Once you see the open space, plus the straight line the ball can travel through, it’s time to be a good actor and set up the desired cut.
