Yes sir!! Man this is it. You are articulating things I teach, and know, but this breakdown empowers me to better know the why so I can articulate it! Your explanation around the 7:19 mark is gold. I coach it as high level functional basketball athleticism. Stop in two steps, while compromising the defenders athleticism where they will have stop on 3. I look at it, like this, I am trying to equip you to be effective against athletes who are bigger, faster and stronger, which is why steps matter!
Nick, I Love that you enjoyed the "why" behind the action.
When working with players, I've always found that if I can drill down to the "why" within the action, I get a higher level of buy-in from them. Once NBA players understand the "why" behind the action, they are so talented that they will most likely acquire the skill.
Then, it becomes about creating situations to help them speed up the process of learning when to apply the skill.
Thanks - very informative! Would love to see some Donovan Mitchell analysis - he has some of the wildest dribbles / shamgods / eurosteps / goofy foot / wrong hand finishes that I've seen
